Good Ol’ Saturday Matinee Weirdness | The League

The very Cool & Collected Brian has started something pretty amazing on his site. It has come to be known as “The League of Extraordinary  Bloggers”. Brian will set forth a

topic in which a plethora of bloggers will post about.  This post is the product of that genius idea. The topic this week:

What movie is, or was, your “go to” Saturday matinee — the comfort movie you always popped into the VCR on a rainy Saturday afternoon, the movie you watched over and over again, driving your parents crazy while you recited the lines along with the characters on the screen?

This was a tough topic for me already! I moved a lot growing up so there were times when I didn’t really know anyone in my neighborhood. Since I didn’t really have any friends to actually go outside and play with it was all movies, movies, movies for me and Saturday was no exception. It was hard to pick just one movie so I picked the one that popped into my head first. Weird Science!

Yes, it's a big poster in the middle of my post. I like posters.

At the same time I discovered Weird Science I also discovered something about computers. My friend’s dad had a computer that we were able to make sing lyrics from the Beastie Boys song Brass Monkey. Not only did I discover that I was a Beastie Boys fan but that I HAD to get one of these computers. THEY CAN DO ANYTHING!

I didn’t get a computer for some time but I was lucky enough to have my own T.V. and VCR in my room. This made it little easier for me to get away with watching what my parents might have considered “questionable” content and, for me, Weird Science had it all. Hot girls, computers, crazy mutant bikers, hot Kelly LeBrock, parties, alcohol, you name it and it’s in there.

"What does it feel like to be a dying man?... you're a dead man John!" - oops, wrong Saturday matinee

Being in a new neighborhood and at a new school can sometimes make you feel a little invisible. Being the new kid isn’t always Footloose, y’know. So whenever I felt that way I could always pop in Weird Science and watch Gary and Wyatt use their computer to make a girl, have an epic party, beat the bad guys in front of everyone AND get the girls in the end. I wanted to go from zero to hero in one weekend too!

  1. Shawn Robare says:

Man, I love this flick. so many fun aspects to the film, like Vernon Wells and his affinity for fishnet tank-tops (like in Commando), or wheter anyone in their right minds would have predicted that Robert Downey, Jr. would have ever broken out of Anthony Michael Hall’s shadow. This is also sort of one of my unofficial trilogy flicks, the Robert Rusler villain trilogy (along with Thrashin’ and Vamp, even though he redeems himself at the end of that one.) Nice choice!

    • Jeremy says:

      Thanks, Shawn!

Yea, I miss Vernon Wells. I think he’s still working but he needs to be in bigger productions as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure some part of his body was covered in Mad Max 2 as well. It could be a stipulation in his contract. :)

I knew Robert Downey, Jr was going to be a star since Back to School! ;) But yea, it’s funny to go back and look at where these megastars started and realize you’ve been a fan of there’s from the beginning.

Robert Rusler has always been “that guy from Weird Science and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2″ to me. I need to look into his career a little. I also want to watch more of Michael Berryman’s movies.

  2. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart because it gave us the line; “How ’bout…a nice greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray?” — Something I probably uttered too many times, whenever my brother was feeling a little under the weather.
